Driving Licence in the UK
How to obtain a driving licence in the UK?
In order to go on your first ride as a driver, even with a professional driving instructor in Great Britain, you have to meet several requirements. Below we explain what you need to do before scheduling your first ride.
1. Provisional Driving Licence
You need to get a temporary driving licence, called Provisional, which will allow you to drive on British roads. To do so, you will need to complete the D1 form which you will find at every Post Office or you can order it from DVLA and send it to DVLA Swansea SA991AF.
Attach a photo, the original document (ID or passport) and a fee of £43 (online £34) in the form of a Postal Order check to the completed D1 form. This is a one-time fee for issuing a provisional driving licence and for exchanging it to a full driving licence after passing the tests.
After receiving your provisional driving licence (2-3 weeks) you can begin driving lessons.
Theory test
The theory test in the UK consists of two parts (both taken on the same day):
- checking your knowledge of road traffic - 50 questions from which you need at least 43 points in order to pass
- video test (Hazard Perception) - 14 interactive videos on which you have to indicate hazards.
DVSA fee - £23
3. Driving test
The driving test takes approximately 40 minutes and consists of the following steps:
- checking your eyesight (reading a registration plate from a distance of 20m)
- Show me - Tell me questions (one tell me question before the exam, one show me question during the exam)
- driving a car on various roads with various traffic conditions in the presence of an examiner
- performing 1 of 4 maneuvers:
– parallel park at the side of the road
– forward bay park (driving in and reversing out of a parking space)
– backward bay park (reversing in and driving out of a parking space)
– right reverse (reversing back about 2 car lengths along the curb) - driving independently following sat nav directions or following traffic signs (around 20 minutes)
DVSA fee - £62 during weekdays or £75 during weekends and Bank Holidays
